Believer from Izhevsk Leaves Penal Colony Having Completed Sentence

Udmurtia

On October 16, 2026, Aleksandr Kutin, 44, one of Jehovah's Witnesses, was released. He spent a total of about 2.5 years behind bars — first in a pretrial detention center, then in penal colony No. 3 for the Mari El Republic — for organizing activity that the investigation interpreted as extremist.

In the penal colony, Aleksandr was known as a kind and calm person. He took part in sports events, and he also picked up a new hobby — making items out of wood. “I learned the importance of patience, kindness toward others, and how to get along with different people. Conquer evil with good,” Aleksandr said what detention taught him.

“When Aleksandr was in pretrial detention, every Friday he sent me a special letter,” recalls Guzel, the believer's wife. “In those letters he wrote his thoughts on Bible verses he read and included beautiful cards with flowers and nature — he set those aside especially for me."

The criminal case against Aleksandr Kutin, Maksim Derendyaev, and Sergey Ashikhmin was initiated in April 2021. The investigation alleged that the believers “coordinated and organized” meetings for worship and the spreading of their faith in Izhevsk. In May 2024, Judge Marina Khokhryakova of the Pervomayskiy District Court sentenced each of them to 3 years in a penal colony.

Maksim Derendyaev was released in September 2026. Sergey Ashikhmin is still behind bars. In total, 10 Jehovah's Witnesses in Udmurtia have faced criminal prosecution for their faith.

The Case of Derendyaev and Others in Izhevsk

Case History
In the spring of 2021, a criminal case was initiated against three believers from Izhevsk for organizing the activity of an extremist organization. The next day, FSB and Investigative Committee officers carried out mass searches in the city and interrogated 14 people. Maksim Derendyaev and Aleksandr Kutin were detained and placed in a pretrial detention center, while a ban on certain actions was imposed on Sergey Ashikhmin. Later, a more lenient preventive measure was imposed on Kutin and Derendyaev. In February 2022, the case against the three men went to court. It was based, among other things, on testimony from secret witnesses. In May 2024, the court sentenced each believer to 3 years in a penal colony. The court of appeal agreed with the sentences imposed. In September 2026, Maksim Derendyaev was released and in October, Aleksandr Kutin.
